President Trump reportedly expressed interest in increasing the size and number of tariffs on Chinese products, Axios reports. Trump was presented with a package that would set $30 billion in tariffs last week and told his team that he wanted to “aim for an even bigger number.” In a meeting Thursday, Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Kevin Hassett was allegedly told by the president to “make the number bigger” and said he would “study the potential impacts of these larger tariffs against China.” Sources also told Axios the administration was considering putting “tariffs on hundreds of Chinese products by the end of March.” The president reportedly wants Congress to pass a bill allowing him to raise tariff levels “to reciprocal levels,” a move that is considered “dead on arrival” on Capitol Hill.
