The husband of Nebraska senator Deb Fischer swerved Kamala Harris’ handshake during the swearing-in ceremony. After Fischer recited the oath while her husband held the Bible, the Republican senator shook Harris’ hand. The vice president then reached out to Bruce Fischer, who nodded in return. The vice president then raised her eyebrows and turned for a photo, which Bruce Fischer maintained a stoic expression for. The senator’s husband open contempt seems to be a more recent development. When his lawmaker wife joined the Senate in 2013, Bruce Fischer shook then-Vice President Joe Biden’s hand and smiled. Deb Fischer won a third term in November after her toughest race yet. Nebraska’s Republican Party, filled with Donald Trump loyalists, endorsed Fischer’s challenger in the primary. Trump himself eventually endorsed Fischer, which she highlighted in her campaign ads. In the general election, she faced Dan Osborn, an independent who out-raised her by $1 million. In her victory speech, Fischer blasted “out-of-state Democrats” for “trying to buy a Nebraska Senate seat.” She added, “they wasted their money. As it turned out, no matter how much the media and the Democrats wanted it to happen, Nebraskans still vote for candidates who share their values.”
