Donald Trump’s handpicked leadership team at the Republican National Committee wasted no time getting to work Monday, firing dozens of the organization’s employees just days after taking over, according to The Washington Post. Close to 60 staffers were let go, the newspaper reported, citing three people familiar with the RNC’s inner workings. The departments affected most by the firings were reportedly data, political, and communications workers. The RNC approved a new leadership slate Friday of hardline Trump loyalists—including the organization’s former general counsel Michael Whatley as chair and his own daughter-in-law Lara Trump as co-chair. The embattled national political organization is facing strong crosswinds during a crucial presidential election cycle, reporting a record low $8.7 million on hand earlier this year. The firings will likely save the RNC some money—though it is unlikely to bridge the gap between it and the rival Democratic National Committee’s $24 million in cash on hand.
