After moving into a bigger apartment last year, one of the best things I did was buy bigger furniture, specifically a bigger couch with a chaise. The only problem with that is that my coffee table no longer worked with the shape of the couch, which lead me to spend over a year looking for the perfect one (this one from World Market).

Coffee tables come in all shapes and sizes. This can get a little overwhelming when you’re looking for the right one for you and your home. But don’t fret! We’ve broken down a few of the most common couch sizes and which shape and size coffee table works best (and recommended a couple of tables, too).

Round or Square

Round coffee tables work for spaces that need the most amount of surface area with the least amount of footprint. If you have a sectional that includes a chaise or a tight space that has a couch and another seating area, a round or square coffee table can help fill the space without getting in the way of the flow of the room.

Rectangle or Oblong

A rectangle or oval coffee table is a classic table but it doesn’t always work with every couch. Long, straight couches or larger U-shaped sections are where these coffee tables shine. The silhouette allows access to the table from basically anywhere on the couch and because there’s not a ton of depth, there’s room in front of it for a path to get to whichever side of the couch you prefer to sit on.

Asymmetrical or Nesting

Both the oblong and nesting coffee tables are the black sheep of the bunch. Nesting tables are great for smaller seating areas that require a lot of table space, like a smaller couch with more than one chair on either side. Asymmetrical tables work great to balance out a space, like one with an L-shaped sectional in a corner, or one with a smaller love seat and chair setup.
