Ryan Ferguson was freed from prison Tuesday after serving nearly 10 years for a murder he says he did not commit. What’s more, Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster announced Tuesday that his office will not retry Ferguson after an appeals court threw out his 2005 conviction. Ferguson, now 29, was accused of killing Columbia Daily Tribune sports editor Ken Heitholt in 2001, although the two main witnesses in the case recanted their testimony after Ferguson’s trial. Hair, fingerprints, and bloody footprints found at the scene did not match Ferguson. An appeals court ruled last week that Boone County prosecutors violated federal law by not sharing key pieces of evidence with Ferguson’s defense team.
