Salinger Didn't Totally Shun Hollywood

NOT SO RECLUSIVE

According to a new letter.

Though it was commonly believed that J.D. Salinger shunned the spotlight of Hollywood, a new letter reveals that the reclusive author communicated with several big-screen producers and was open to translating his work into film. According to a document found by Shane Salerno, the director of new documentary Salinger, after publishing The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger struck a deal for one of his short stories to be turned into a film. It later failed after casting couldn’t be agreed on. “It’s interesting the pains to which he goes to clear up this misconception about himself,” Salerno told Variety about the author's perceived embattled relationship with Hollywood.
