After Donald Trump denied Thursday morning that Hurricane Maria led to nearly 3,000 deaths on Puerto Rico, San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz took to Twitter to bash the president’s attempt to negate her island’s devastation. “This is what denial following neglect looks like,” Cruz wrote. “Mr Pres in the real world people died on your watch. YOUR LACK OF RESPECT IS APPALLING!” In subsequent tweets, she went further: “Mr Trump you can try and bully us with your tweets BUT WE KNOW OUR LIVES MATTER. You will never take away our self respect. Shame on you!” Her tweets included screenshots of President Trump’s offending comments, in which Trump flatly negated the George Washington University’s findings that nearly 3,000 people died in the aftermath of Maria, and blamed Democrats for falsely inflating the numbers. Cruz fired back in another tweet: “Simply put: delusional, paranoid, and unhinged from any sense of reality. Trump is so vain he thinks this is about him. NO IT IS NOT.”
