A collaboration among more than 300 scientists has released its first data from an effort to map dark matter, or the unseen glue that holds galaxies together. The Dark Energy Survey maps the invisible substance by using a sophisticated digital camera in the Chilean Andes to observe where dark matter warps light. Scientists say they believe dark matter makes up about 25 percent of the universe, with dark energy taking up an additional 70 percent. They believe the DES map—which is set to grow in size exponentially—is “the largest contiguous dark matter map that’s been made.”
