Second Navy SEAL Arrested Over Alleged ISIS Murder

A second Navy SEAL has been charged in connection with a war crimes investigation revolving around the alleged murder of a wounded Islamic State detainee in Iraq last year. While Lt. Jacob Portier wasn't present for the alleged homicide in 2017, authorities say he helped to cover up alleged war crimes committed by Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher. Portier insists he’s innocent and his defense attorney, Jeremiah J. Sullivan III, said: “Lt. Portier’s combat service to our country warrants a medal, not a charge sheet.” The Navy Times reports that the probe targets more than a dozen SEALs deployed to Iraq between 2017 and 2018, as well as leaders in Naval Special Warfare Group 1 who handled allegations. Gallagher is alleged to have stabbed a wounded Islamic State fighter in the body and neck until he died, then posed for a photograph next to the body.
