After more than 30 years of marriage, Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman are separating. From Arnold Schwarzeneggar and Maria Shriver to Al and Tipper Gore, see more couples who split after decades together. Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman are parting ways after more than thirty years of marriage, the couple’s representative told Entertainment Tonight on Sunday. The actor and actress, who worked together on the sitcom Taxi, have been married since 1982, and have three children together. The two met at an off-Broadway play in 1970 and lived together for more than a decade before marrying. They also appeared together in the feature film Matilda, and founded Jersey Films, a production company. Dan Steinberg / AP Photo When Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver met at a charity tennis match in 1977, it was love at first sight. But since he was a moderate Republican from Austria and she was part of America’s most famous Democratic dynasty, they said it wouldn’t last. And after 34 years, they were finally right. The former California governor and Shriver announced Monday that after 25 years of marriage and four children, they had agreed to separate amicably “This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us,” the couple said in a joint statement. “After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion, and prayer, we came to this decision together. At this time, we are living apart, while we work on the future of our relationship.” Romantics on both sides of the political aisle hope the couple have not terminated their mixed marriage. The 59-year-old musician and the 49-year-old actress were spotted at many of his concerts soon after the break-up, and were vacationing together this week in Cancun, Mexico. Alan Diaz / AP Photo While filming a small role in 1979’s Apocalypse Now, Harrison Ford met aspiring screenwriter Melissa Mathison. Four years later, soon after the release of E.T., for which Mathison had written the screenplay, the two were married. But in 2001, after having two children together, the pair separated, eventually leading to one of the most expensive Hollywood divorces. (In 2004, Mathison received an estimated $85 million plus half of any future earnings from movies Ford made while they were together.) But Han Solo was not solo for long—in 2010, he married actress Calista Flockhart, his girlfriend of eight years. Mitchell Gerber / Corbis Meeting 19-year-old Diandra Luker at Jimmy Carter’s 1977 inauguration wasn’t exactly a fatal attraction for 33-year-old Michael Douglas—unless you’re talking about his bank account. The couple wed just six weeks later and were married for 21 years, but their 1998 divorce was one of the nastiest in Hollywood history. Though Diandra was awarded $45 million and two homes (in Beverly Hills and Majorca), she recently took the actor back to court, seeking half his take from Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. "I am not a greedy person by nature," Diandra told Harper’s Bazaar in April, sounding like the anti-Gekko. "I ask myself every night if I should walk away." Meanwhile, Michael Douglas recently joked with Oprah about the tough year he’s had, including current wife Catherine Zeta-Jones’ bout with bipolar disorder: "I said, 'I've got my oldest son in federal prison. My ex-wife is suing me, and I've got cancer.' It's kind of hard for the wife to say, 'I'm depressed.'" To end his 26-year marriage to costume designer Myrna Colley-Lee, actor Morgan Freeman agreed to one of the largest settlements in history—a staggering $400 million, including a $7 million home in the British Virgin Islands. The 73-year-old Oscar winner had reportedly been carrying on a 10-year relationship with E’Dena Hines, the granddaughter of his first wife. Steve Parson, PA / Landov Neil Diamond famously wrote that “love was only true in fairy tales.” But when the singer wanted to divorce Marcia Murphey, his wife of 26 years, it was more of a financial nightmare. Murphey received a reported $150 million in the settlement— one of the most expensive ever —but Diamond later said, graciously, that she was “worth every penny.” Fotos International / Getty Images “I wasn't an angel, either. I cheated, too," Valerie Bertinelli told Oprah years after her divorce from rock star Eddie Van Halen. "He claims to this day that I cheated first, but I don't know.” Bertinelli and Van Halen were wed in 1981 but in 2007, after 25 tempestuous years, they ended their marriage. Still, the couple remains on good terms—in January, Van Halen and their son, Wolfie, attended Bertinelli’s wedding to businessman Tom Vitale. AP Photo Though their daughter Britney was once married for a mere 55 hours, Jamie and Lynne Spears were together for 30 years before deciding to divorce in 2002. Britney was philosophical about the split, telling People magazine: "It's the best thing that's ever happened to my family. My mom and dad, bottom line, do not get along.” But what did she know? Eight years later—oops, they did it again!—the Spearses reconciled, though they have no plans to remarry. Michael Germana, SSI Photo / Landov Though it was a reasonably amicable split after 32 years of marriage, Rupert Murdoch’s 1999 divorce from his wife, Anna, is considered the most expensive in history—the settlement was worth a reported $1.7 billion. Just 17 days after it was final, the then-68-year old media mogul married his current wife, Wendi Deng, who is 38 years his junior. Later that year, Anna Murdoch also remarried, and in 2001, she discussed Murdoch in an interview for the first time: "I think that Rupert's affair with Wendi Deng—it's not an original plot—was the end of the marriage. His determination to continue with that. I thought we had a wonderful, happy marriage. Obviously, we didn't." Kevork Djansezian / AP Photo One of the most shocking splits in recent years was the announcement in June 2010 that Al and Tipper Gore were divorcing—just two weeks after celebrating their 40th anniversary. “This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration. We ask for respect for our privacy and that of our family, and we do not intend to comment further.” But Rush Limbaugh just couldn’t resist taking a swipe at the former vice president “The environmentalist wackos have put this notion up there that divorce contributes to global warming,” the radio host said. “And now, here is Mr. Global Warming, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, now contributing to his own crisis.” Mark Wilson / Getty Images You’d think that after a 55-year marriage, media mogul Sumner Redstone might not walk down the aisle again. But three years after divorcing his wife, Phyllis, the then-85-year-old Redstone married Paula Fortunato, who was 39 years younger. Redstone didn’t wait another 55 years to end his second marriage, however—he filed for divorce after five. Ron Galella, WireImage / Getty Images
