Serbian authorities have arrested Goran Hadzic, the last remaining fugitive sought by the U.N. war-crimes tribunal. Hadzic led the effort to block Croatia’s independence from Serbia in the early nineties; he is accused of leading Croatian Serb troops to massacre 300 men in the town of Vukovar in 1991, and then arranging the deportation of 20,000 people from the town. He lived in the open until 2004, when the U.N. indictment on war-crimes charges forced him into hiding. He was found living at Fruska Gora mountain, near his family home. His arrest removes Serbia’s last big obstacle to gaining E.U. candidate status.
