Nine hours of testimony from Michael Cohen meant an extra long “A Closer Look” from Seth Meyers Wednesday night. The Late Night host spent more than 15 minutes going deep on the hearing, beginning with GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz’s blatant threats against Cohen the night before.
“I didn’t think anyone could out-sleaze Donald Trump, but you did it, my friend,” Meyers told Gaetz. “You are trying to intimidate a witness on Twitter. What’s next, are you going to Instagram a picture of a brick with the caption, ‘About to throw this through your window?’”
Moving on to Cohen’s testimony itself, Meyers played a highlight reel from the former Trump fixer’s opening statement before noting, “Damn, he just listed off a bunch of alleged crimes committed by the president on national TV. You know it’s so ironic, Trump finally went to Vietnam and he’s getting killed back home.”

Later, Meyers revealed the “stand-out line” from Cohen’s comments about the infamous Trump Tower meeting. “What struck me, as I look back, and thought about the exchange between Don Jr. and his father,” Cohen told Congress, “was first that Mr. Trump had frequently told me and others that his son Don Jr. had the worst judgment of anyone in the world.”
“Man, you know it’s bad when you get dissed for being dumb by the guy who threatened his college not to release his SAT scores,” Meyers joked. “‘He’s dumber than me, and I’m dumb as a rock!’”
The host went on to compare the “prosecutorial style” of House Democrats on the Oversight Committee compared to “unprepared” Republicans who repeatedly “embarrassed themselves” in front of millions of Americans. Worst of all was Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), who “tried to impeach Trump’s character but for the most part just yelled all the random buzzwords you hear Fox News pundits screaming about all day.”
“Today, we witnessed something truly rare and historic,” Meyers said. “One of the president’s closest personal confidants detailing Trump’s alleged crimes and personal failings for the entire world to see.”
