The Broward County Sheriff’s Office is investigating reports that several of its deputies waited outside while a gunman shot 17 people dead in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week, the Sun-Sentinel reports. Coral Springs police officers reportedly came forward with the claims a day after one of the deputies, School Resource Officer Scot Peterson, resigned amid public outrage that he stood outside the building during the massacre. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel on Friday said he was told “one or more” other deputies had also failed to confront gunman Nikolas Cruz during the shooting spree. “If we find out, as we did with Peterson, that our deputies made mistakes and didn’t go in, I’ll handle it like I always have. I’ll handle any violations of policy or procedures or whatever accordingly,” Israel told the Sun-Sentinel.
