Sexually transmitted diseases have hit a new high in the United States, federal officials announced Wednesday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced in a new official report that more than 1.5 million people have been diagnosed with chlamydia, making it the most common STD in the U.S. The CDC also recorded nearly 24,000 casese of syphilis and 400,000 cases of gonorrhea. Last year’s STD report by the CDC showed that 2014 was also a record year for sexually transmitted illnesses, but it seems that the trend is worsening. “The STD epidemic is getting worse in the United States and, in fact, is at its highest levels yet,” Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention told NBC News. “Last year was the first year that we saw increases but those increases are actually continuing and at a higher rate.”
