Writer Stephen Elliott filed a lawsuit Wednesday against Moira Donegan, creator of the “Shitty Media Men” spreadsheet list, for $1.5 million in damages, claiming she and various “Jane Does” made “libelous” and “knowingly false statements” about him, according to a filing obtained by Jezebel. Elliott accuses Donegan of conspiring to create the “publicly accessible” list, on which he was listed as having “rape accusations” and “sexual harassment” allegations made against him. The suit claims the Jane Does were “encouraged to publish any and all defamatory allegations without evidence” on the list and seeks to find the identity of the women through discovery. Elliott also claims he became “extremely depressed” after employers, colleagues, friends, and family “did not return his calls like they had in the past” because of the list, which gained notoriety after being featured in the press. Elliott also lamented the alleged effects of the list in a September essay. The Cut reports that Elliott’s lawyer, Andrew Miltenberg, has made a name for himself “defending men accused of sexual assault, and advocating for the roll-back of Title IX protections.” In an essay identifying herself as the creator of the list, Donegan wrote that she wanted to “create a place for women to share their stories of harassment and assault without being needlessly discredited or judged.” She wrote for The Cut, “The hope was to create an alternate avenue to report this kind of behavior and warn others without fear of retaliation.”
