A new study published in the Nature Climate Change journal Monday showed that the snow atop California's Sierra Nevada Mountains last winter was the lowest it has been in 500 years. The snow was supposed to serve as a vital water source for the state overcome with drought. Melting snow from the mountains provides a third of all drinking water for the state.
