The Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, has been booted out of office in a “no confidence” vote after his party was implicated in a corruption scandal. Rajoy, who has been prime minister since 2011, is the first Spanish leader in modern times to be ousted in this way. Ahead of the vote, Rajoy congratulated Socialist Party leader Pedro Sánchez, who will automatically succeed him. “In light of what we all know, I presume that the vote of no confidence will go ahead, and Pedro Sánchez will become the prime minister and I want to be the first to congratulate him,” Rajoy told the Spanish parliament Friday morning. “I will accept the result of the vote as the democrat I am, but I cannot agree with what has been done.”
