Stephen Colbert Has a Tough Message for Trump’s Feckless Opposition

'LITTLE PADDLES'

Colbert argued there was only one Democrat who behaved appropriately at Trump’s speech.

Stephen Colbert mocked President Donald Trump’s address to Congress in his monologue Tuesday, but he saved the most scorn this time for Democrats.

“Many women on the Democratic side showed up dressed in fuchsia.” Colbert said. “It’s the kind of bold protest that says, ‘This is a test print and your magenta cartridge is working.’”

Colbert joked, “[Trump] barked out one appalling claim after another, but don’t you worry: Democrats are getting ready to fight back with their little paddles.”

He showed a clip of Democrats at the address, holding up small signs that read, “False,” whenever Trump lied about something.

“That is how you save democracy: by quietly dissenting,” Colbert quipped. “Or bidding on an antique tea set. It was hard to tell what was going on.”

Colbert did note one Democrat he was impressed by: Rep. Al Green, who was forced out of the chamber after repeatedly yelling “No mandate!” at Trump.

“Ultimately [Speaker Mike] Johnson called in the sergeant-at-arms to remove the 77-year-old Texas congressman,” Colbert explained.

“Now, some people have questioned why so much muscle was needed to remove one old man with a cane,” Colbert continued. “But it turns out it was for a serious reason: when security searched him, they found that he had smuggled in a spine.”

“You can’t have that,” Colbert joked.

Colbert summed up Trump’s address by saying, “So, there you go. Another two hours we’ll never get back.”

“I would like to apologize to our audience for making them watch it,” Colbert said. “That’s time you all could have spent with your family, not eating eggs.”

Colbert concluded, “In the end, Trump’s first address to Congress was much like his first six weeks: filled with useful lies, and applauded by useless idiots.”
