Stephen Colbert Mocks Bernie Sanders’ ‘Old White Guy’ 2020 Announcement

STILL FEEL THE BERN?

‘Bernie made his campaign announcement this morning in the most Bernie way possible.’

“The 2020 presidential election is heating up,” Stephen Colbert said in his Late Show monologue Tuesday night before revealing the latest candidate to enter the Democratic primary: Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

“Bernie made his campaign announcement this morning in the most Bernie way possible,” the host said. “On Vermont Public Radio. After that he made it official by posting a flier on his local co-op bulletin board.”

Colbert predicted that Sanders might have more trouble rising to the top of a much larger 2020 field than he faced in 2016, putting the photos on the screen of every Democrat who is currently running or expected to jump in the race.

“The field is also way more diverse this time with multiple women, people of color, the first openly gay major party presidential candidate,” Colbert said. “But for all that diversity, Bernie Sanders does not believe that hurts his chances.”

As Sanders told an interviewer earlier in the day, “We have got to look at candidates, you know, not by the color of their skin, not by their sexual orientation or their gender and not by their age,” but instead focus on their “abilities” and “what they stand for.”

“Yes, like Dr. King, I have a dream,” Colbert said as Sanders. “A dream where this diverse nation can come together and be led by an old white guy.”
