First Lady Melania Trump may have stolen the show with her wide-brimmed white hat when French President Emmanuel Macron and wife Brigitte arrived at the White House on Monday. But Stephen Colbert thinks the choice of headwear had a less fashionable purpose.
Narrating one “awkward moment” from the first couple’s public appearance, Colbert said, “Trump goes for the kiss, and oh! Saved by the hat.”
“That is more than a hat, that is a defensive perimeter,” the Late Show host added. “Their deal is, either she gets to wear the hat or Trump has to wear a cone.”

Of course, the moment between “these two love birds” that garnered even more attention was the president’s latest seemingly desperate attempt to get her hand in his as they were standing next to France’s first couple.
“Trump tried to hold Melania’s hand and she is not having it man,” Colbert said at the excruciating footage played. “He’s like trying to arouse a dead trout.”
“You can’t blame her though,” he added. “I mean, she watches 60 Minutes. She knows where that hand has been.”
