The family of Stephon Clark—the 22-year-old unarmed black man who was shot by Sacramento police—filed wrongful death claims on Thursday seeking $35 million. The Sacramento Bee reports that the family is seeking “$20 million for Clark’s two infant children and $15 million for his grandparents and parents.” Clark was shot to death on March 18 during a foot chase after police were “responding to reports of a suspected car burglar in the Meadowview area.” The biggest wrongful death claim rewarded in the city was over $6 million, but the national notoriety of the case likely contributed to the large amount demanded by Clark’s family. Footage from the shooting shows that the officers waited several minutes to help Clark after he was shot, and a disputed private autopsy claimed that Clark had been shot six times in the back.
