Steve Martin has established himself as a major player in the art world, but his eye isn’t perfect: He paid $850,000 in 2004 for a painting supposedly by the German-Dutch artist Heinrich Campendonk and sold it two years later for $720,000. However, German investigators now believe the painting was produced by a forgery ring they busted earlier this year. Martin says the gallery that sold it to him promised to take responsibility if the painting turned out to be fake.
