Students across the nation are using the hashtag #IfIDieInASchoolShooting on Twitter to share their fears and push for action on guns laws in the aftermath of the Santa Fe High School shooting that killed 10. Andrew Schneidawind, a college sophomore from Virginia, started the hashtag on Sunday, and it’s been tweeted “nearly 50,000 times” since. “I have this fear every day,” he told Teen Vogue. After Santa Fe, he said “now is the time for me to step up. Now is the time for me to do something.” Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School senior Sofia Whitney wrote, “#IfIDieInASchoolShooting politicize my death. It’s not too soon to talk about guns. It’s too late.” MSD junior John Barnitt wrote to “dump [his] body in front of the White House,” and Sarah Chadwick said to “use [her] death to push for gun reform.” Another user wrote, “Cremate me, pour my ashes on the steps of the capital. Don’t let me or my classmates become just a statistic.”
