A team of surgeons at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine performed the first “total penis and scrotum transplant in the world,” according to Time magazine. The March 26th surgery took nine plastic surgeons and two urological surgeons 14 hours to complete. The penis and scrotum, along with a “partial abdominal wall,” came from a deceased donor. The recipient was a military veteran who was injured by an explosive device in Afghanistan. “When I first woke up, I felt finally more normal… [with] a level of confidence as well. Confidence… like finally I’m okay now,” the anonymous recipient said in a statement. He was reportedly released from the hospital this week.
