Roger Federer defeated Richard Gasquet of France 6-4 6-2 6-2 to earn himself and his native Switzerland their maiden Davis Cup title, with Federer, a 17-time tennis Grand Slam champion, gaining the victory at the not so tender age of 33. The visitors prevailed 3-1 in the best-of-five-match series. Switzerland had never before won team tennis’ most prestigious event, competing in one previous final in 1992—when Federer was 11. “For me personally, obviously I’m unbelievably happy because I’ve been playing in this competition for probably almost 15 years now,” Federer told reporters. The maestro had to pull out of the ATP Finals in London this month with a bad back, but there was no sign of injury as he blasted past Gasquet.
