The driver of a Texas pickup truck displaying an anti-Trump bumper sticker was arrested Thursday on an outstanding warrant, a day after the local sheriff threatened disorderly conduct charges over the “offensive display.” Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office records indicate that the driver, Karen Fonseca, was taken into custody at about 2 p.m. Thursday on an outstanding fraud warrant issued in August. Her bond was set at $1,500. A day earlier, Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls had posted a photo of Fonseca’s vehicle on Facebook and asked for the public’s help in identifying the driver. Nehls, who is reportedly eyeing a bid for Congress, had also tagged major news outlets in his post, which declared that a prosecutor was considering disorderly conduct charges over the sticker. Nehls’ public appeal was met with scorn by rights groups that said criminal charges over a bumper sticker would violate the driver’s constitutional rights. Fonseca had refused to remove the sticker despite Nehls’ warning, saying it’s a matter of “freedom of speech and we’re exercising it.”
