A year after ceasing print publication, The Village Voice is shutting down entirely, CNN Money reports. In a statement to the outlet, owner Peter Barbey said Friday that the publication will no longer be publishing new stories. “Although the Voice will not continue publishing, we are dedicated to ensuring that its legacy will endure to inspire more generations of readers and writers to give even more speed to those same goals,” Barbey said. “We have begun working to ensure that the enormous print archive of The Village Voice is made digitally accessible.” He let go half of the staff Friday, while the other half—around “15 to 20 people”—will remain employed to “wind things down” and archive the publication’s online material, Gothamist reports. “I bought the Village Voice to save it, this isn’t exactly how I though it was going to end up,” Barbey reportedly said. “I’m still trying to save the Village Voice.”
