A boy places a candle on the shoreline rocks during a vigil near the capital Valletta to commemorate migrants who died at sea. European Union leaders who decided last year to halt the rescue of migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean reversed their decision at a summit hastily convened after nearly 2,000 people died at sea. Public outrage over the deaths peaked this week after as many as 900 migrants died last Sunday when their boat sank on its way to Europe from Libya.

A helicopter flies past while more than 800 schoolchildren, teachers, and volunteers form the shape of a fish with a sad expression, along with the Chinese characters that read “refrain.” The event was in honor of Kids Ocean Day, to send a global message to stop consuming reef fish in order to protect the earth's coral reefs, according to organizers. The image was originally drawn by a local 7-year-old student.
