Theresa May: If Human Rights Laws Get in Our Way, We Will Change Them

Just 36 hours before the polls open for the upcoming United Kingdom general election, Prime Minister Theresa May declared that she is willing to change human rights laws if it makes it easier to tackle terrorism and extremism. May has been facing pressure over policing cuts and intelligence failures following a series of attacks in London and Manchester over the past three months. She proposed measures that would extend prison sentences for those convicted of terrorism and make it easier to deport foreign terror suspect. “I mean doing more to restrict the freedom and the movements of terrorist suspects when we have enough evidence to know they present a threat, but not enough evidence to prosecute them in full in court," she said. “And if human rights laws stop us from doing it, we will change those laws so we can do it.” May previously received backlash during her time as Home Secretary last year when she said the UK should leave the European Convention of Human rights regardless of whether the Brexit vote passed.
