Hundreds of thousands of people filed out into the streets in cities across the U.S. on Saturday to call on the Trump administration to reunite families separated under the president’s zero-tolerance border policy. The Families Belong Together event, which includes more than 600 planned marches, were due to kick off around midday in both major and smaller U.S. cities, as well as London and Berlin. The rallies were backed by the American Civil Liberties Union and several immigrant advocacy groups, but many of those in attendance were new to activism and said they’d simply felt compelled to speak out against what many see as inhumane policies. President Trump backtracked on his family separation policy last week, but organizers say the fate of hundreds of migrant children is still in the balance. “We have to keep moving, the Trump Administration can’t be trusted to follow through. We don’t see this as a legislative problem, this is a Trump Administration problem,” Jess Morales Rocketto, the policy director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, told TIME magazine. Trump has so far remained silent on the demonstrations, instead tweeting out a message of support to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, whom he praised for “doing a fantastic job” of “eradicating the worst criminal elements.”
