Three Lebanese soldiers were killed at a checkpoint near the Syrian border on Tuesday, with the gunmen fleeing across the border. Clashes have broken out in the area before, near the town of Arsal, where Syrian rebels smuggle weapons across the border. In February, four Lebanese soldiers and two fighters were killed in a gunfight. This week has been particularly dangerous across the border, with shells from Syria striking the Lebanese region of Hermel on Monday and two rockets hitting Beirut on Sunday. Meanwhile, fighting continued in Syria on Tuesday in Qusayr and Damascus—and there were more reports of chemical-weapons usage by President Bashar al-Assad against the opposition. In Brussels, the European Union let its embargo on weapons lapse, which could allow arms to flow into the rebels’ hands.
