A man who claims he is the victims’ father surrendered to police in Texas late Thursday, hours after three children were found shot dead in an apartment about 50 miles from Houston. The grim discovery was made after a relative called police and asked for a welfare check at the Pointe Ann Apartments in Texas City. There, officers discovered the lifeless bodies of an infant, a 2-year-old, and a 5-year-old, along with a woman who survived a gunshot wound to the head, police said. The woman is said to be in stable condition at a Galveston hospital but is unable to speak to investigators; her relationship to the children was not immediately clear. The Houston Chronicle reports Juniad Hashim Mehmood, 27, called police and identified himself as the suspect and allegedly said he “killed his children and tried to kill his wife.” He reportedly told officials he was unarmed and gave them his address.
