See you in seven years, Tokyo! The Japanese capital has won its bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games, beating out Istanbul in the final round. (Madrid, which had also been a top contender, was knocked out first.) Tokyo was a favorite all along, partly because it has hosted the Games before and was seen as a reliable choice—its bid touted a "safe pair of hands." Organizers were also able to put aside fears of the lingering effects of 2011's nuclear leak at Fukushima. Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey, has lost it attempt to make history by playing host to the first Games in a majority Muslim country.
