Family Research Council chief Tony Perkins said this week that conservative evangelical leaders are willing to look the other way over President Trump’s bad behavior so long as he delivers on policy. “We kind of gave him—‘All right, you get a mulligan. You get a do-over here,’” Perkins said on Politico’s Off Message podcast, in light of news that Trump allegedly paid off an adult-film actress to remain quiet about their affair in 2006. Perkins said conservatives “were tired of being kicked around by Barack Obama and his leftists. And I think they are finally glad that there’s somebody on the playground that is willing to punch the bully.” He added, “Look, Christianity is not all about being a welcome mat which people can just stomp their feet on.”
