DEVASTATED

Worst of the year.

Alabama declared a state of emergency on Monday, as thunderstorms and deadly tornadoes hit the country for the second day in a row. On Sunday, 16 were killed in the storms, and more casualties were counted across the southern and midwestern states on Monday. Authorities report at least three dead in Alabama, 10 in Arkansas, and one in both Oklahoma and Iowa. Before Sunday, the country hadn't experienced a storm of EF3 or greater, which means winds greater than 136 mph, in 160 days, the fourth-longest streak on record.
