An Amtrak train carrying members of Congress and staff hit a truck near Charlottesville, Virginia, on Wednesday morning. The White House confirmed one fatality and one serious injury at the scene, with “no serious injuries among members of Congress or their staff.” Reports and those on the scene say that Rep. Jason Lewis (R-MN) hit his head and was taken to the hospital as part of standard concussion protocol. UVA Medical Center tweeted that they have received five patients from the crash, with one in “critical condition.” The train was carrying the congressional passengers to a Republican retreat at the Greenbrier resort in West Virginia. “Our train heading to the retreat full of Republican members of Congress has been an accident... Apparently, we have hit some kind of dump truck,” Rep. Mark Walker (R-NC) told The Daily Beast. “Helicopters and security are all over the place... We are stopped on tracks.”
