President Donald Trump tweeted condolences for the family of John McCain, minutes after McCain’s office announced his death of brain cancer at 81. “My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!” Trump’s tweet comes after years of insults from Trump, including “he's not a war hero. He's a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren't captured.” McCain spent more than five years of a prisoner of war in North Vietnam after he was shot down and tortured. Former President Barack Obama, who ran against McCain in 2008, also issued a statement. “Few of us have been tested the way John once was, or required to show the kind of courage that he did. But all of us can aspire to the courage to put the greater good above our own. At John’s best, he showed us what that means. And for that, we are all in his debt.”
