President Donald Trump has appealed his hush money conviction. The president, who was found guilty last May on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment made to porn actor Stormy Daniels during his 2016 campaign, filed a notice of appeal in New York Wednesday, hoping that the state’s mid-level appeals court will overturn his conviction. “President Donald J. Trump’s appeal is important for the rule of law, New York’s reputation as a global business, financial and legal center, as well as for the presidency and all public officials,” one of Trump’s lawyers, Robert J. Giuffra Jr., said in a statement to the Associated Press. “The misuse of the criminal law by the Manhattan DA to target President Trump sets a dangerous precedent, and we look forward to the case being dismissed on appeal.” Trump was sentenced to an unconditional discharge on Jan. 10, meaning that his conviction will stay on record but won’t lead to jail time or probation. He subsequently became the first person with a criminal record to win the presidency.
