President Trump on Tuesday directed the Department of Justice to draft a rule that could effectively ban so-called “bump-stocks,” the first federal action in response to the Parkland, Florida shooting. “Today, I am directing the Department of Justice to dedicate all available resources to complete the review of the comments received, and, as expeditiously as possible, to propose for notice and comment a rule banning all devices that turn legal weapons into machine guns,” Trump said in an official presidential memorandum. Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) praised Trump for the action but said Congress must still pass legislation to ban the weapon attachment.
