President Trump tweeted on Saturday that the recent mass layoffs at the news organizations Buzzfeed News and HuffPost were due to “Fake News and bad journalism.” The media industry lost about 1,000 jobs this past week, as Buzzfeed, HuffPost, and many regional newspapers owned by Gannett, the nation's largest newspaper chain, slashed jobs across the country. BuzzFeed announced this week that roughly 15 percent of its workforce would be laid off as the company retools its business model, while HuffPost laid off about 20 journalists on Wednesday. “Sadly, many others will follow. The people want the Truth!” the President tweeted. His remarks come after reports that many of the laid off journalists have been inundated with death threats by coordinated internet trolls, who also often post anti-Semitic messages on the social media of Jewish reporters. Buzzfeed News Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith responded to Trump's tweet, writing: “What a disgusting thing to say about dozens of American workers who just lost their jobs.”
