President Donald Trump has canceled his New Year’s plans in response to the government shutdown that is expected to continue into the new year. The president had planned to fly south to Palm Beach, Florida, to celebrate New Year’s at his Mar-a-Lago estate. But during a Friday morning appearance on Fox News, Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said the president was in Washington, D.C., “all weekend, all Christmas” and is “staying in Washington D.C. over New Year’s.” Trump also canceled his plans to spend Christmas at Mar-a-Lago, where he stays many winter weekends. The president’s estate, which also serves as a private golf club, typically hosts a large, ticketed New Year’s Eve party for dues-paying members and their guests.
