President Trump said Wednesday that while he’s never discussed a pardon for his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, the idea is “not off the table.” Trump went on to allege that Manafort was coerced to lie by lawyers for the Mueller investigation. “If you told the truth, you go to jail,” Trump said. The New York Times reported Tuesday that Manafort’s lawyers were still in contact with the president’s legal team, and had continued to brief them on the evidence Manafort was giving to the Mueller investigation. Federal investigators have accused Manafort of repeatedly lying to them. “It’s actually very brave,” Trump said of Manafort. “And I’m telling you, this is McCarthyism. We are in the McCarthy era. This is no better than McCarthy.”
