President Donald Trump announced a new branch of the U.S. military, the “Space Force,” during a National Space Council meeting Monday. He directed the Department of Defense and the Pentagon to “immediately” begin establishing the force, which will focus on outer space. “Our destiny beyond the Earth is not only a matter of national identity but a matter of national security,” Trump said. He first mentioned the idea during a speech in March. If the Space Force is created, it would be the sixth branch of the armed forces. The newest branch is the Air Force, created 71 years ago.
