Trump Says the Migrant Caravan Is Over, Claims They Were Repelled by Walls and Fences

President Trump has claimed victory over a “caravan” of Central American migrants traveling to the U.S. who made a big issue of for the midterm elections—saying the people fleeing violence are now heading home or remaining in Mexico after their entry to America was thwarted. “Despite the large Caravans that WERE forming and heading to our Country, people have not been able to get through our newly built Walls, makeshift Walls & Fences, or Border Patrol Officers & Military,” Trump wrote Tuesday morning on Twitter. He added: “They are now staying in Mexico or going back to their original countries.” He claimed that protecting the U.S. border with Mexico would be much easier if he was allowed to build “a great wall” along it. The Trump administration was condemned after photographs showed mothers and infants at the border being stung by tear gas and pepper spray. Following the elections, mentions of the migrant caravan largely disappeared from Trump’s statements.
