President Trump appears to have eased his threats of an imminent attack on Syria, saying airstrikes “could be be very soon or not so soon at all!” On Wednesday, Trump reacted angrily to reports that Russia had vowed to shoot down any U.S. missiles directed at Syria, warning both Russia and Syria that the strikes “will be coming, nice and new and ‘smart!’” But the president was in a more cryptic mood Thursday morning, saying on Twitter: “Never said when an attack on Syria would take place. Could be very soon or not so soon at all! In any event, the United States, under my Administration, has done a great job of ridding the region of ISIS. Where is our ‘Thank you?’” The White House National Security team is due to meet later Thursday to discuss its response to a suspected chemical-weapons attack in Syria’s Douma that killed scores of people.
