President Trump has threatened that he’s “ready” to slap tariffs on every single imported Chinese good—amounting to more than $500 billion of products. “I’m ready to go to 500,” the president told CNBC’s Joe Kernen, referring to the dollar amount of Chinese imports the U.S. accepted in 2017. So far in the trade war, the U.S. has put tariffs on just $34 billion of Chinese products, which was met with fury and retaliatory measures from Beijing. “I’m not doing this for politics. I’m doing this to do the right thing for our country,” Trump said. “We have been ripped off by China for a long time.” In New York, stock-index futures declined sharply after the interview was broadcast—Dow Industrials futures were down 100 points at 6:45 a.m. ET.
