President Trump will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to seven people, including Miriam Adelson, wife of GOP mega-donor Sheldon Adelson, and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), the White House announced Saturday. The five other recipients include Elvis Presley, baseball legend Babe Ruth, the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, former NFL quarterback Roger Staubach, and former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page. The medal, the country’s highest civilian honor, acknowledges those who “made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” Hatch was chosen for his nearly half a century of service in the Senate, during which he “sponsored more bills that have become law than any other living Member of Congress,” the White House said. Adelson, a doctor and philanthropist, along with her husband contributed more than $21 million to Trump’s 2016 campaign, and the pair also contributed heavily to Republican causes in the recent midterm elections.
