Secretary of Homeland Security Kristjen Nielsen announced that President Donald Trump will sign a proclamation deploying “National Guard to our southwest border to assist the Border Patrol,” at the White House press briefing Wednesday afternoon. “The president has directed that the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security work together with our governors,” Secretary Nielsen said. “Border security is homeland security, which is national security... the president has reiterated this many times[.]” In a press release, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the department “fully supports the efforts of the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security announced today to secure our border” and said he would “soon be announcing additional Department of Justice initiatives to restore legality to the southern border.” This comes after Trump told reporters on Tuesday that “until we can have a wall and proper security, we’re going to be guarding our border with the military.”
