Fox News host Tucker Carlson sparked outrage Wednesday night by claiming that women earning more than men leads to “more drug and alcohol abuse” and “higher incarceration rates,” HuffPost reports. Carlson’s argument? That as the male-dominated manufacturing industry declined in rural America, all that remained were schools and hospitals, which tend to employ more women, allowing them to begin out-earning their male counterparts. “Study after study has shown that when men make less than women, women generally don’t want to marry them,” Carlson claimed, while the chyron blared “MEN IN DECLINE.” Carlson added that “Over big populations this causes a drop in marriage, a spike in out-of-wedlock births, and all the familiar disasters that inevitably follow. More drug and alcohol abuse, higher incarceration rates, fewer families formed in the next generation.” It’s far from the first time Carlson has made controversial statements: In mid-December, he lost a number of advertisers after he claimed that immigrants make the United States “dirtier.” His new comments drew similar ire online, the HuffPost notes, sparking yet another call for advertisers to stop buying time on Carlson’s shows.
