Two senior cabinet ministers dramatically quit the U.K. government Thursday morning in protest at Prime Minister Theresa May's draft agreement for Britain’s exit from the European Union. May's hopes for getting the deal passed by lawmakers are damaged by the resignations, which include that of her cabinet secretary in charge of Brexit, Dominic Raab, who quit saying he could not “in good conscience support” the deal which May presented to her cabinet and the country last night. The 500-page agreement was the culmination of months of work, but has been hit with criticism from both sides of the E.U. debate in Britain. Raab, who campaigned to leave the EU in 2016’s referendum, was pictured pulling a grim face as he walked out of Downing Street after a five-hour cabinet meeting yesterday. His resignation was followed by the departure of work and pensions secretary Esther McVey. The resignations could trigger a major rebellion against the prime minister. Brexit enthusiasts have condemned the agreement hammered out by May, saying it locks the U.K. into the role of a “vassal state” of the EU for years to come.
